If your property has security cameras (CCTV) or recording devices, you must disclose them clearly in your property description and follow the rules of each booking platform. Transparency protects guest privacy and keeps your listing compliant with the law.

Where can security cameras and recording devices be installed?

You must disclose the presence of any CCTV or recording device in the following areas:

  • Non-private areas: entryways, parking areas, or access roads leading to the property.
  • Common areas: places shared with other guests or the public, such as lobbies, stairways, elevators, or laundry facilities.
  • Exclusively rented areas: areas only guests can access, such as private gardens or pools. These spaces also fall under this rule.

What must you include in your property description?

Your property description must clearly state how many security cameras or recording devices are installed and where they are located in or around the property. This applies even if the devices are not recording or are turned off, for example a device placed near the doorbell.

Concealing security cameras or recording devices is strictly forbidden. During the guests' stay, all devices must be turned off, so this information should always appear in your description.

Platform-specific guidelines

Booking.com

Booking.com does not allow CCTV in areas exclusively rented by guests, even if the devices are turned off during the stay. To keep your listing active on Booking.com, we recommend removing any CCTV in these areas.

If the CCTV cannot be removed, you must:

  • Indicate its presence in the "Safety" section under "Amenities" in Configuration on the left side of the screen.
  • Specify the exact locations in your property description.

Adding CCTV in your property configuration does not automatically update your listing description, so you need to update the description yourself.

For more information, read the Booking.com requirements on CCTV.

Airbnb

Since April 30, 2024, Airbnb's policy on security cameras, recording devices, noise monitors, and smart devices has been as follows:

  • No security cameras or recording devices are allowed in any part of the interior, even if turned off or disconnected, or in common areas.
  • Exterior areas with high privacy expectations, such as enclosed outdoor showers or saunas, cannot have cameras.
  • Noise decibel monitors are allowed indoors but must be disclosed. They cannot be placed in bedrooms, bathrooms, or sleeping areas.

Hosts who do not comply may have their listings removed. Read the full Airbnb security device policy.

Other channels

Other channels, such as Vrbo, allow CCTV in areas exclusively rented by guests, but the devices must be turned off during the stay. Always show the devices to your guests at check-in and inform them that they are turned off.

Important general information

  • Adding CCTV to your property configuration does not automatically display it in your listing description. Update the description yourself.
  • Hosts are fully responsible for any cancellations made by a channel due to CCTV that was not explicitly shown in the property configuration.
