When are infants over capacity allowed in a reservation?

An infant (a child under 2 years old) can be booked over your property's maximum capacity only if your property allows children. When children are allowed, most booking channels automatically accept at least one infant over capacity. VRBO is the exception, because it counts infants as adults.

Which booking channels allow infants over capacity?

Each booking channel has its own rules for infants. The main differences are listed below.

  • Airbnb: Infants are children under 2 years old, and children are aged 2 to 12. Infants stay for free if children are allowed at the property. Children aged 2 to 12 are priced the same as adults. Guests can bring up to 5 infants over maximum capacity.
  • Booking.com: Guests can bring 1 infant (under 2 years old) over capacity.
  • Holidu: Infants under 2 years old stay for free, and everyone else counts as an adult. There is no limit on the number of infants allowed over maximum capacity.
  • VRBO: Infants and children count as adults, so infants do not get an over-capacity allowance.

Can I change the infant over-capacity setting?

No. These policies are part of the terms and conditions you agreed to when you listed your property, so the setting cannot be changed. You also cannot add restrictions about infant over-capacity to your property description.

How can I stop infants from exceeding capacity?

If you do not want infants to exceed your property's capacity, the only option is to set your property to "children not allowed" in your amenities settings. To do this:

  • Go to Configuration in the top-left corner.
  • Navigate to Amenities.
  • Navigate to Children.
  • Select Children Not Allowed.

What happens if I cancel a booking because an infant exceeds capacity?

If you cancel a booking because an infant exceeds capacity, the cancellation is recorded as a host cancellation. You may face penalties from the booking channel. Before you cancel, consider whether the booking policy already allows the infant, or contact the booking channel for guidance.
